ReGen Rehab unveils first private rehabilitation hospital for Malaysians
ReGen Rehabilitation International Sdn Bhd (ReGen Rehab) today announced their Let There Be Hope campaign aimed at making rehabilitation available to all Malaysians.“Rehabilitation is the key health strategy to living a longer, better quality life. We, at ReGen Rehab, will achieve this by upholding four strategic pillars, each targeting a different segment of Malaysians,” says Sue Lee, CEO of ReGen Rehab.
“ReGen Rehab will be extending its expertise to Malaysians through these four pillars, which are public education, professional training for healthcare professionals, actively engaging corporates and government organisations, and reaching out to the community,” Lee added.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified rehabilitation as the key health strategy of the 21st century, especially as many populations around the world experience longer life expectancy with increasing chronic illnesses. Strengthening rehabilitation in health systems is paramount. Rehabilitation services should be integrated between primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare to overcome the underdevelopment of rehabilitation in developing countries. Hence, stand-alone rehabilitation specialty hospitals are essential to meet the complex needs of patients. This must be in tandem with healthcare financing to make rehabilitation accessible to everyone.
Bringing rehabilitation to Malaysia
ReGen Rehab is the first private specialty hospital company dedicated to the provision of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation medicine. Its first hospital has just opened in Petaling Jaya, being the first private rehabilitation hospital in Malaysia to provide comprehensive medical rehabilitation services and facilities under one roof.
Its vision is to become a Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation in Malaysia and in Asia specialising in:
Stroke rehabilitation
Neurorehabilitation
Cognitive rehabilitation
Musculoskeletal rehabilitation
Sports rehabilitation
Cancer rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation
Pain management
And many other conditions.
Rehabilitation: changing the landscape in Malaysia
“The Malaysian healthcare system has reached a level of maturity on par with other developed countries,” explains Robert Ortenzio, a Board Member of ReGen Rehab and Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Select Medical. “Healthcare providers should move towards greater specialisation, which allows for better outcomes in clinical and resource utilisation. This is the opportune time for ReGen Rehab to enter the market as a specialty provider of post-acute rehabilitation as the demand is expected to grow dramatically in the coming years.”
“Good rehabilitation care is absolutely essential to helping patients who have suffered a critical illness or injury to maximize the restoration of functions,” Ortenzio adds. “In the US, rehabilitation medicine is an integral specialty discipline which grew as health insurers began to recognise and cover its services. Select Medical is proud to support ReGen Rehab in its endeavours to expand the capacity and quality of rehabilitation care services available to Malaysians.”
Let There Be Hope: Reaching out to all Malaysians
At ReGen Rehab’s launch of its Let There Be Hope campaign in September, the company made several exciting announcements. ReGen Rehab has started working with the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) and the National Co-Operative Movement of Malaysia (ANGKASA) to promote the awareness of rehabilitation. With their support, ReGen Rehab will be able to extend its services to millions of Malaysians.
The launch also featured an insightful panel session with three recipients of rehabilitation care under ReGen Rehab’s make-a-wish programme (Wish Upon A Star). Each recipient shared how effective rehabilitation care in ReGen Rehab has changed their lives after suffering a debilitating condition: stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury.
“We are very proud of the progress our patients have made,” says Dr. Lydia Abdul Latif, Chief Medical Officer of ReGen Rehab. “When each of them first came to ReGen Rehab, they were experiencing multiple difficulties with regards to speech, movement, significant pains and functional impairments. Through tailored, evidence-based, patient-centred clinical treatment plans specific to individual needs and recovery goals, they were able to maintain their motivation and achieved their desired outcomes.”
“This is the main treatment philosophy of rehabilitation,” continues Dr. Lydia. “And it is the cornerstone of all of our services. ReGen Rehab brings together a multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure that every aspect of the patient’s needs is met. The team consists of physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists and neuropsychologists.
First-hand experience of rehabilitation treatment
During the panel, the recipients shared their journeys and the most impactful aspects of their rehabilitation treatment.
“I felt I was too young to have a stroke and I had no idea how to deal with it,” says Ms. Cheam Swee Mui, aged 45. “I could barely walk 5 meters and only with someone assisting me. ReGen Rehab’s team has helped me learn how to strengthen my body so that I could stand up and walk on my own. The most effective therapy was the lower limb strengthening with the various gym equipment. This helped me to stand on my own, which is the first thing I do in the morning. When I start the day being able to stand up by myself, I feel like the rest of the day is full of hope.”
Mr. Bahtiar Mohd Nooh, aged 51, who suffered from a traumatic brain injury due to an accident, says, “I was in a wheelchair when I first came to ReGen Rehab. I couldn’t walk much, I couldn’t talk much, and I had problems with my memory and attention. It has been a month and now I’m able to walk without assistance. With occupational and speech therapy treatments, my memory has improved and now I can talk a lot. Overall, I am happy I’ve made great progress and I know that the treatment I get is meant to train me to be independent in the long run.”
Ms. Carol Cheah, aged 61, says that ReGen Rehab’s treatment has given her a renewed sense of hope. “When someone of my age suffers a fall and sustains a back injury like me, it changes your life forever,” she says. “I feared that my severe pain and problems with walking and moving my upper limbs would last the rest of my life. However, ReGen Rehab makes sure all their patients know that the first step to recovery is believing that you can be yourself again. And I am happy to see the results of my stay here.”
Rehabilitation has given these patients a renewed hope for their future. ReGen Rehab hopes to transform the Malaysian medical landscape by raising awareness and promoting accessibility to rehabilitation through the four pillars of the Let There Be Hope campaign. This would shape ReGen Rehab into a Centre for Excellence in Malaysia and in the region.
