Tokyo Kitchen serves authentic Japanese cuisine straight from Japan. Food here is cross fusion between traditional Japanese and Malaysian cuisine, you can get the normal Japanese dishes such as sushi, sashimi, udon and etc. plus some other dishes that are distinctly Japanese albeit with a Malaysian twist. For those who don't want to burn a whole in their pocket, best advise to come dine during lunch hours cause they can get a really value for money set lunch here.

Ocean King Seafood restaurant is probably the most well known for tourist who visit Sandakan to enjoy good fresh seafood. This restaurant can cater a large capacity of people. I have to admit that prices of seafood is a little higher than other seafood restaurant of equal food quality but may not have the same ambience as this restaurant. A fresh seafood selection is available in the water tanks, quality food and beautiful seaview.

YUZU has been praised for its innovative menu and quality food, but be prepare to pay a little more for a quality ingredients comparing with other Japanese outlets in the mall. Yuzu offer Japanese set menus which are affordable without compromising the quality of food. If you like sashimi, do ask for the chef selection of the day but prepare to pay a hefty price for it. For my dining experience, Yuzu's service staffs are attentive and helpful. The restaurant is decorated with a Zen style of interior which create an warm and elegant ambient.

Salted fish was created before refrigeration technique was invented, fish and other seafood were cured in salt. This locally known salted ikan talang (Queenfish) is the largest of 4 species of queenfish found in tropical waters. Most Talang fish caught by anglers are between 0.8kg to 8kg. Specimens 10kg or more are less common. This species is silvery-grey in colour with bronze patches on the head. It has a firm, white meat which make it excellent for salted fish.

There are a few popular Bak Kut Teh places in Sandakan. Nam Chai Restaurant Bah Kut Teh located at Bandar Nam Tung (Tanah Merah) is one of the local favorite too. Bak Kut Teh in Sandakan is quite a little different from West Malaysia, which slightly rich in peppery hot flavor and flooded with soup, it's available at lunch and dinner. Here you can choose seafood (whole fish, fish fillet and prawn) or the usual traditional Bak Kut Teh ingredients like pork ribs, pork belly, pork intestine, pork kidney and etc. Rice noodle in Bak Kut Teh soup is also one of the specialty in Sandakan.

The challenge? Each team gets handed the same ingredients, and they have 15 minutes to come up with as many kuih ketayap as possible. It’s more fun to cook something yourself and you get to eat it too. Judges got to watch the fireworks and teamwork in the 2 cooking station, walk around amongst the chefs during the challenge as they do their thing.

If you like seafood I will strongly recommend you not to miss out dining at Bridge 8, Sim Sim Water Village, it was the highlight of my overall foodie experienced. There are 3 to 4 restaurants located along Sim Sim Water Village (stretch from bridge no.8, 7, 6 and 5). This restaurant is build on the sea with bridges attached to land and all floating residential. There are two restaurants with similar name on Bridge no.8, Restaurant Seafood Sim Sim 88 and Restaurant Seafood Sim Sim it is located side to side. In Sabah you can really see a true sense of unity, where the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Kadazan and others will sit down and dine in a Chinese restaurant as long as it serve no pork.

I was delighted to accept the Four Points by Sheraton invitation to stay for two nights in Sandakan, Malaysia. It was my first time in Sandakan and I have a very good experience to share. As I arrived at the hotel, I was greeted by a lovely lobby with modern furniture. Hotel staff were dressed in pleasant uniform and welcomed us with a friendly smile. Check-in was swift and in no time I was on my way up the elevator to my room.
