This unusual restaurant started life as an ad campaign for Yellow, a New Zealand company similar to the Yellow Pages. The idea was to build a restaurant in a tree using only resources listed in the company’s directories. The designer took pains to minimise the impact on the tree and the surrounding forest.

Taiwan has a chain of restaurants called Modern Toilets where you sit on a toilet and eat from a toilet-shaped bowl. All seats in the diner are made from toilets, not chairs. Sinks, faucets and gender-coded “WC” signs appear throughout the restaurant.

Maid Cafe – Akihabara District, Tokyo, Japan
The adorable maid look, popular in Japanese animation and comic books become the central theme of this quaint little cafe in the Akihabara district. While the maid uniforms (although surely fueled by the bizarre fantasies of otaku) seem normal enough for waitresses, you eventually realize those aren’t exactly “waitresses” wearing those pink plaid dresses and aprons.
‘Nyotaimori’ in Japanese literally means ‘female body plate’, and this restaurant named after the tradition of eating sushi and sashimi off a nude woman’s body takes the concept to a whole new level. An edible body, with dough ‘skin’ and sauce ‘blood’ is wheeled into the room on a hospital gurney and placed upon a table. The hostess begins the meal by cutting into the body with a scalpel and then patrons dig in, operating on the body to reveal edible ‘organs’.
It’s often said that if you take away one or more of your senses, the remaining ones get stronger. That’s the idea behind Pitch Black, a Beijing restaurant where patrons eat in complete darkness. Illuminating devices like cell phones and watches are strictly forbidden, and it’s so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Don’t think you can get away with any funny business, however – the waiters wear night-vision goggles.
Continuing the creepy, otherwordly themes is the Vampire Cafe in the Ginza section of Tokyo, where the interior is almost entirely blood red. Guests are ushered down a long hallway with red blood cells superimposed on the floor. Inside, the décor includes heavy velvet drapes, black coffins dripping with red candle wax, skulls and crosses. Many of the meals are vampire-themed, and diners drink red cocktails from martini glasses.
Sometimes it seems like all Americans think of when they think of Japan is stuff like kimonos, samurai and robots, but apparently we’re not alone. Hajime Restaurant, a Japanese restaurant in Thailand uses samurai robot waiters to serve their customers in what most ignorant gaijin must assume is a traditional Japanese manner. To be fair, this isn’t really all that disturbing, unless you’re afraid of robots taking over the earth.

In Japan businessmen unwind with a little karaoke, but in Nanjing, China they have take a very different approach. The Rising Sun Anger Release Bar lets their customers use their staff as punching bags—literally. For anywhere from $7 to $40 patrons can vent their anger not only through excessive drinking, but by beating the crap out of one of their well-built male employees. The bar has sparked some controversy as to whether or not it’s providing a healthy outlet or encouraging violence.
